Police have opened a murder investigation following the tragic death of Joanne Newlands, 41, at a block of flats on Kirkton Avenue, Glasgow.
Disturbing Death Sparks Police Action
Officers raced to the scene just after 8pm on Tuesday, 17 March 2026, after a welfare concern call. Emergency services attended but Joanne was sadly pronounced dead at the property.
Suspect Arrested and Released
A 49-year-old man was arrested in connection with Joanne’s death on Wednesday, 18 March, but has since been released pending further enquiries. Police say the circumstances are suspicious and an extensive probe is underway.
Calls for Witnesses to Come Forward
Detective Chief Inspector Gordon MacKenzie said: “Our thoughts are with Joanne’s family and friends at this time. We are providing them with support as our investigation continues.
“An extensive investigation is being carried out and we are working to establish the full circumstances of what happened in the days prior to Joanne’s death.
“I am appealing to anyone who may have any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to contact us as soon as possible.”

Local Area Commander, Chief Inspector Karen Cameron, added: “We understand the significant impact this will have on the community and we would like to thank everyone for their help so far.
“There will be a continued police presence in the area as enquiries continue, and anyone with concerns can speak to officers.”
