Alan and Bernita Davies Sentenced to 8 Years
Alan and Bernita Davies, both 60, from Pandy, Wrexham, have been locked up for eight years after causing or allowing the death of their daughter, Steffie Davies.
The couple appeared at Mold Crown Court on 19 March, where they pleaded guilty to neglect leading to the death of a vulnerable adult. They must serve two-thirds of their sentence behind bars before being eligible for release on licence.
Tragic Discovery of Steffie’s Condition
Steffie, 32, was found dead at her parents’ home on 26 May 2023 after Bernita called emergency services shortly after 8.30am. Paramedics were horrified by the state she was in and alerted police, who arrested the parents that same day.
The cause of death was confirmed as sepsis caused by infected pressure ulcers, severe malnutrition, and very low body weight. Despite Steffie’s dire health, no medical help had been sought, and she wasn’t known to social or mental health services.
Police Slam “Abhorrent” Neglect
“The conditions Steffie was found in were abhorrent, showing neglect over a prolonged time,” said Detective Superintendent Sarah-Jayne Williams. “It’s unbelievable that she deteriorated so badly with no intervention from parents who lived with her and knew her condition.” “Both Alan and Bernita admitted their care was woefully inadequate, which tragically led to Steffie’s death.” “Thanks to my team for their outstanding work in this sad and complex case. My thoughts are with Steffie’s family.”
A Sister’s Heartbreaking Tribute
Steffie’s sister shared memories of happier times, recalling their childhood dances to Abba and family holidays. She spoke of Steffie’s struggles with anxiety and social situations, and her love of animals, having studied Animal Care at Northop College.
“Steffie had so much potential but lacked the support she desperately needed,” she said. “She attended my wedding in 2015 – I feel lucky to have photos of her happy that day. No sentence can ever make up for the cruelty she suffered.”
