The Isle of Wight Police Department has been working with mainland road policing officers to target drivers who exhibit the “Fatal Four” behaviours.
Drink/drug driving, driving without a seatbelt, speeding, and using a mobile phone while driving are the four poor driving habits that frequently result in serious or fatal collisions.
The Safer Roads Unit conducted mobile speed camera enforcement last month, making 53 visits to over 20 locations across the Island and identifying 268 speeding violations.
Officers also targeted drivers who lack legal documentation, such as a valid licence, insurance, or tax, as well as those who drive defective vehicles.
Superintendent Jim Pegler, the Isle of Wight’s district commander for policing, stated: “We are committed to addressing these dangerous driving behaviours and will make every effort to keep the public informed of our progress.
“We urge the public to continue reporting any concerns or crimes to the police.
While you may not see an immediate police response, it helps us understand the most affected areas on the Island to inform where we need to carry out enforcement activity and provide additional education to road users.
