Detectives from Police Scotland have launched a plea for information after human remains were discovered inside a burnt-out van in Newmilns this Monday.

Fire Erupts on Quiet Single-Track Road

Emergency services were called out at 12:05am to tackle a fire in a lay-by on a single-track road between Priestland and Darvel, in the scenic Galston Moor area—locals know it as Monk Belt or Mast Walk.

Unexplained Death Sparks Investigation

The victim’s identity remains unknown, and police are treating the death as unexplained. Detective Inspector Craig Gilmour said:

“At this stage of our investigation, it is unclear why the van was parked in this layby or how it caught fire. We urge anyone with information to come forward. “This is a popular spot for walkers and dog walkers. Several vehicles likely passed by around the time of the fire. If you were in the area around midnight on Monday and saw a white van parked or on fire, please contact us. Also, if you heard loud noises or have dashcam footage, it could be crucial to our investigation.”
