Massive Blaze Destroys Canal Boat on River Lea
A huge fire ripped through a five-tonne canal boat on the River Lea near Wick Lane, Bow, East London, late Sunday night. The massive blaze gutted the boat completely and sparked a major response from the London Fire Brigade (LFB).
Firefighters Race to Scene Amid Exploding Gas Cylinder Danger
The alarm was raised at 10:07 PM on August 4th after more than ten emergency calls flooded in from worried locals. Six fire engines and 40 firefighters from Homerton, Bethnal Green, Stratford, and nearby stations battled the raging fire.
An LFB spokesperson confirmed the boat was destroyed and revealed a gas cylinder found at the scene was swiftly removed and cooled to stop it from exploding. “Some cylinders can explode when exposed to heat,” the spokesperson warned, highlighting the serious risks fire crews face.
Smoke and Sirens: Witness Captures Dramatic Fire
Local resident Sarah Louise posted a dramatic video on social media showing thick black smoke billowing over the canal with emergency vehicles flashing at the scene. Firefighters brought the blaze under control just over an hour later at 11:23 PM.
Investigation Underway as Residents Express Relief
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Locals living along the canal breathed a sigh of relief that no injuries were reported. The swift and professional work of the London Fire Brigade—especially their careful handling of the dangerous gas cylinder—has earned widespread praise.
The LFB urged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activity or fire hazards, particularly in places where gas cylinders or other flammable materials are stored.
