A 22-year-old Royal Marine from Wolverhampton has been locked up for three and a half years after a deadly confrontation in Exmouth.
Fatal Clash on Exmouth Street
Joseph Jones, 22, of Chillington Lane, Codsall, admitted manslaughter at Exeter Crown Court for the fatal assault of 29-year-old Cemal John Yilmaz on December 13, 2025.
Mr Yilmaz was rushed to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth in critical condition but tragically died three days later from his injuries.
One Punch Changed Lives Forever
The court heard Jones punched Mr Yilmaz during a chance encounter after both men had been drinking on Church Street, Exmouth, on December 12.
The pair exchanged words – including Mr Yilmaz calling Jones “a Brummie” to which Jones shot back, “No, I’m from Wolverhampton.”
Moments later, Jones delivered a fast jab to the victim’s face, knocking him instantly to the ground.
Despite bystanders trying to help and calling an ambulance, Jones fled to the Royal Marine Commando Training Camp at Lympstone.
Police and Court Proceedings
- Jones presented himself at Exeter Police Station the next day and was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
- He later admitted he never imagined his punch would have such devastating consequences.
- Initially charged with grievous bodily harm, Jones was rearrested on suspicion of murder after Mr Yilmaz’s death.
- He was granted conditional bail but later pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
- On March 13, Jones received a sentence of three-and-a-half years, with eligibility for release after two years and four months on licence.
