Sainsbury’s and Matalan Urgently Recall Christmas Stocking Filler Due to Health Risk

Sainsbury’s and Matalan have issued an urgent recall of the Beeline Belly Bar, a popular Christmas stocking filler, after it was found to pose a significant health risk due to elevated levels of nickel.

Health Concerns Highlighted

The Beeline Belly Bar, a flower-themed piece of body jewelry, has been identified as containing nickel levels exceeding legal safety limits. The UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) warned that prolonged exposure to nickel can lead to allergic reactions, including contact dermatitis.

A statement from the Office for Product Safety and Standards explained:

“The product presents a chemical risk as elevated levels of nickel were found. Nickel is a skin sensitizer and can cause allergic reactions if present in items that come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin.”

Product Withdrawal

Sainsbury’s and Matalan, where the belly bar was sold, have advised customers to stop using the product immediately and return it for a full refund. Receipts are not required for returns.

Beeline, the supplier of the product, apologized for the oversight, saying:

“Product safety is our top priority. During follow-up checks, an elevated nickel value was found in a part of the belly bar. Wearing this belly bar can cause allergic reactions. We are removing it from sale and offering full refunds for returned items.

Customer Warning

The UKHSA added that individuals experiencing skin irritation or redness after using the belly bar should cease contact immediately and consult a healthcare professional if symptoms persist.
