A major incident has been declared in Somerset after a coach carrying schoolchildren crashed off the A396 Cutcombe Hill near Wheddon Cross, around seven miles from minehead/">Minehead, this afternoon. The crash, which occurred at approximately 3pm on Thursday, 17 July 2025, involved a 70-seater coach returning pupils to Minehead Middle School from a school trip. Emergency services have confirmed multiple casualties, with several individuals taken to hospital.Large-Scale Emergency Response

- Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, who are working to free remaining passengers still trapped inside the vehicle.
“Most of the passengers have been taken off the coach,” police confirmed in a statement.The A396 remains closed and motorists are being urged to avoid the area while emergency crews continue to work.
Coach Operator Statement
Peter Prior-Sankey, director of Ridlers Coaches, which operated the vehicle involved, told UKNIP:“We were made aware of an incident involving one of our 70-seater vehicles at around 3.15pm. We are liaising closely with the school and emergency services. Everyone at Ridlers is deeply concerned, particularly about the welfare of the driver and pupils. We will do everything possible to understand what has happened.”

Local MP Rachel Gilmour shared on X (formerly Twitter):“I have heard news about a distressing road traffic incident around Wheddon Cross this afternoon. Emergency services are present, so please give them space to work. My thoughts are with all involved.”Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander also confirmed she is receiving regular updates on the situation.
