Major School Coach Crash Sparks Emergency in Somerset

A major incident has been declared after a 70-seater coach carrying schoolchildren crashed off the A396 Cutcombe Hill near Wheddon Cross, Somerset, this afternoon. The vehicle, returning pupils from a school trip to Minehead Middle School, veered off the road around 3pm on Thursday, 17 July 2025.

Multiple Casualties as Rescue Efforts Underway

The coach left the road near the junction of Ashwell Lane and Steart Lane, between Wheddon Cross and Timbercombe — roughly seven miles from Minehead. Emergency services confirmed multiple casualties, with several passengers rushed to hospital.

The large-scale response includes Avon and Somerset Police, South Western Ambulance Service, and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. Fire crews are still working to free passengers trapped inside the coach.

“Most of the passengers have been taken off the coach,” police said in a statement.

The A396 remains shut between Wheddon Cross and Dunster, with drivers urged to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

Coach Operator Speaks Out

Peter Prior-Sankey, director of Ridlers Coaches, which operates the vehicle, said:

“We were made aware of an incident involving one of our 70-seater vehicles at around 3.15pm. We are liaising closely with the school and emergency services. Everyone at Ridlers is deeply concerned, particularly about the welfare of the driver and pupils. We will do everything possible to understand what has happened.”
