Stockport Man Jailed for Coercive Control After Clare’s Law Tip Off

Benjamin Carlin, 43, from Stockport, has been locked up for two years and one month and slapped with a 10-year restraining order. He pleaded guilty to controlling and coercive behaviour at Croydon Crown Court on 17 March.

Victim Speaks Out About Abuse

Carlin’s dark side was revealed when Surrey Police met with a woman under Clare’s Law in August 2025. She confessed to a nightmare relationship where Carlin’s controlling and threatening behaviour left her terrified and trapped.

She told police that ignoring Carlin’s calls triggered explosive abuse. He often threatened to kill her and her family and said he’d take his own life if she tried to leave.

Threats, Harassment and a Dramatic Arrest

On 13 August 2025, the abuse escalated. Carlin accused the victim of not paying him enough attention and threatened to strangle her if she didn’t comply. During a police call, he bombarded her with more than 10 calls demanding proof of her whereabouts.

Officers arranged for West Midlands Police to arrest Carlin, who was out of the local area. He pleaded guilty on the morning of his trial, sealing his fate.

Support and Praise for Clare’s Law

The victim expressed heartfelt thanks to Surrey Police, saying:

“If Clare’s Law hadn’t been applied, I’d probably still be with Ben, lying to myself that there would ever be a safe time to leave. There never was. I’m proud I stood up for myself — for me, for other women in similar situations, and for the woman whose tragic death made Clare’s Law possible. Thanks to Surrey Police’s help, I believe I have my life back and cannot thank you enough.”

Detective Charlotte Barrett praised the victim’s courage, emphasising the power of Clare’s Law:

“Coercive and controlling behaviour aims to dominate someone’s life through abuse and intimidation. This case only surfaced because of the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme. If you’re worried about someone’s behaviour in a relationship, make a referral or an application for a friend or family member — it could save a life. When you report domestic abuse to us, you will be listened to and supported.”
