Tanzania Launches Massive Attack on Million-Strong Quelea Bird Swarms
Tanzania is waging war on millions of quelea birds to save its vital rice crops from utter destruction. The Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA) has kicked off an aggressive operation using cutting-edge technology to slay these tiny but voracious pests.
Five Million Birds Destroyed in Northern Tanzania
Last week, TPHPA zeroed in on the Manyara region, where around 1,000 acres of commercial crops faced a feathery apocalypse. Joseph Ndunguru, acting TPHPA chief, revealed they successfully wiped out swarms of five million quelea birds in the area. Teams are now scoping out other hotspots to stop further damage.
Quelea Birds: Tiny Terror on the Fields
These pint-sized birds are infamous for their appetite. Able to devour over 50 tonnes of crops in a single day, quelea flocks are an agricultural nightmare. Recognised as the world’s most abundant bird species, their relentless feeding threatens food security across Africa.
Aerial Surveillance and Ongoing Battles to Protect Crops
TPHPA is not taking any chances. Aerial surveillance sweeps continue across Tanzania to monitor and control quelea outbreaks. Previous operations across Africa have combined air and ground efforts to keep these crop predators in check — and Tanzania is leading the charge once again.
