Rhodes Wildfires Force Massive Evacuations
The stunning Greek island of Rhodes is battling devastating wildfires that have forced around 19,000 people to flee. Tourists dreaming of a summer holiday paradise found themselves escaping flames instead. Greece’s Ministry of Climate Change and Civil Protection called this “the largest ever evacuation from a wildfire” in the country.
Thousands Rescued by Land and Sea
As raging fires spread uncontrollably, authorities sprang into action. About 16,000 evacuees made their way out by land, while a further 3,000 were rescued by sea. Miraculously, no deaths have been reported. However, six people were briefly hospitalised due to smoke-related breathing issues.
Holiday Chaos: Flights Cancelled, Tourists Stranded
The wildfires have wreaked havoc on holiday plans, particularly for British tourists. Major travel firms like Jet2 Holidays and Tui cancelled all Rhodes flights and breaks until at least July 30. Thomas Cook followed suit, halting holidays to high-risk zones through July 31 and offering full refunds.
- EasyJet, Ryanair, and British Airways kept flights flying for now.
UK Steps In to Help Stranded Brits
The UK government acted swiftly, sending a “rapid deployment team” to assist British holidaymakers forced to abandon hotels and leave belongings behind. Many had to walk miles to safety, while rescue boats pulled the most vulnerable from danger along the shore.
Scorching Heat Fans Flames
The fires started in Rhodes’s mountainous interior but spread fast thanks to fierce winds, baking temperatures soaring to 45°C (113°F), and dry conditions. The blaze has raged for six days, putting firefighters and rescue teams through their paces.
