Reckless Driver Jailed for 16 Years After Fatal Icy Crash
Scott Gunn, 38, from Weavering, Maidstone, has been locked up for 16 years following a deadly driving rampage on an icy country lane. The BMW driver smashed into a couple walking their dog, killing Tom and Sue Corkery in Bearsted last January.
Family Breaks Down in Court Over Tragic Loss
The Corkerys’ daughter, Claire, delivered a raw and emotional victim impact statement. “I have relived the day over and over,” she told the courtroom. Tom was just days from retirement, and the couple had just cleared their mortgage. Sue had beaten thyroid cancer only recently.
“Two years has passed and the pain of their loss is still the same.”
Claire called out Gunn for a “basic lack of humanity” and accused him of treating the justice system “as a game.” Their son Simon said the tragedy had “uprooted” his life. “They had so much to look forward to – often talking about grandchildren,” he said.
Speed Demon Hits 87mph on Icy Road, Killing Couple and Dog
Gunn had owned the BMW X5 for just a week when tragedy struck. Despite clear warnings of ice, CCTV captured other cars crawling along at 20mph. But Gunn’s car data revealed he blasted through at a terrifying 87mph seconds before the crash.
A passerby even tried to warn Gunn of the ice by waving, but the speeding BMW slammed into Tom, Sue, and their dog Gracie, killing all three instantly.
Judge Slams “Too Little Too Late” Remorse as Lawyer’s Plea Falls Flat
Gunn’s lawyer branded him a “devoted family man” and claimed he was genuinely sorry, blaming the ice for the fatal smash. But Judge Oliver Saxby KC wasn’t buying it.
“Real remorse involves accepting full responsibility. You tailored your evidence to limit blame – pointing fingers at ice and signage. Dodging responsibility until the trial makes your claims impossible to accept.”
Gunn also picked up a three-month sentence for criminal damage and faces an eight-year driving ban after he serves his jail term.
