As children across the United Kingdom return to school following the Christmas break, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is emphasizing the importance of simple steps that parents can take to protect their children and communities amidst rising levels of winter illnesses. These steps are vital for ensuring a healthy start to the year and minimizing the impact of illness on school attendance and work schedules.

The UKHSA is urging parents to:

1. Teach Good Hygiene Habits: Encouraging regular hand-washing with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds or the use of hand sanitisers can effectively prevent the spread of viruses. Additionally, using tissues to catch coughs and sneezes and disposing of them properly before washing hands is essential in preventing infection.

2. Stop the Spread of Stomach Bugs: In addition to rising cases of norovirus, the UKHSA has noted increased levels of other gastrointestinal infections like Shiga toxin-producing E.coli. To prevent the spread of these infections, individuals should wash their hands thoroughly with soap and warm water, use bleach-based products to clean surfaces, and refrain from preparing food for others if they have symptoms or for 48 hours after symptom resolution. Visitors to hospitals and care homes should avoid such visits while unwell.

3. Recognize When to Keep Children at Home: While children with minor symptoms like a runny nose, sore throat, or slight cough are encouraged to attend school if they are otherwise well and have no high fever, children should stay home if they exhibit symptoms such as fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, or severe illness. It is essential to follow guidelines regarding symptom resolution before returning to school.

4. Get Vaccinated: Vaccination, especially against flu, offers the best protection. The flu vaccine, administered as a nasal spray for children, is crucial in safeguarding them against this illness. It is essential to ensure that children in eligible age groups receive their flu vaccines to reduce the risk.

5. Use NHS Resources: The NHS UK provides accessible guidance for parents to manage winter illnesses at home effectively. Utilizing these resources can help families navigate health challenges during the winter months.

Dr Catherine Falconer, Deputy Director of Health Equity and Inclusion Health at UKHSA stressed the importance of these measures, noting that they not only protect individual households but also contribute to the well-being of the broader community during this season when common seasonal viruses tend to disrupt education and lead to more severe illnesses. Following this guidance, parents can help ensure the health and safety of their children and those around them.
