Filming has commenced for the highly anticipated 13th series of the beloved period drama “Call the Midwife,” and fans can expect to meet two new characters who will join the main cast at Nonnatus House.

Renee Bailey and Natalie Quarry have been cast as pupil midwives, bringing fresh energy and compelling storylines to the show. Bailey will portray Joyce Highland, a hardworking and bright individual from Trinidad. Although she is kind-hearted, Joyce carries a traumatic past that she cannot keep hidden forever. Quarry, on the other hand, will embody the character of Rosalind Clifford, described as warm, passionate, and funny.

The upcoming series, set in 1969, will consist of eight hour-long episodes and is scheduled to air in 2024. As with previous seasons, “Call the Midwife” will delve into complex medical and personal situations encountered during midwifery and district nursing rounds. The show will explore the stories of the Sylheti and Nigerian communities, as well as the challenges faced by individuals living around the docks.

Creator and writer Heidi Thomas expressed her excitement about the new season, stating, “After so many years, our much-loved regular characters are like family to me – and our wonderful fans so often tell me that they feel the same.” Thomas promised that the 13th series would be filled with beautiful moments celebrating the connections between the young and old.

Executive producer Dame Pippa Harris shared her enthusiasm for the return of the series and the addition of Bailey and Quarry to the cast. She expressed her anticipation for audiences to follow the journeys of Joyce and Rosalind as they navigate the streets and lives of Poplar’s residents. Harris also highlighted the captivating storytelling of Heidi Thomas, which weaves together themes of joy, despair, love, history, and medicine, all intertwined with the arrival of diverse newborn babies.

Fans of “Call the Midwife” can look forward to the return of the cherished Nonnatus team, including Megan Cusack, Linda Bassett, and Helen George. The 13th series promises to captivate viewers with its heartwarming and thought-provoking narratives, showcasing the resilience and compassion of midwives and the communities they serve.
