Celebrity chef and long-time MasterChef presenter Gregg Wallace has spoken out following historical misconduct allegations made against him to the BBC. In response to the accusations, Wallace has stepped down from his role on the popular cooking show while an independent review is conducted by production company Banijay UK.
Wallace Responds to Allegations
In a series of Instagram stories posted today (December 1), Wallace suggested that the complaints originated from “middle-class women of a certain age” involved with Celebrity MasterChef.
“I’ve worked with over 4,000 contestants from all walks of life during my 20 years on MasterChef,” he said. Now, I’m reading in the paper about 13 complaints over that time. The complaints are reportedly coming from a handful of middle-class women of a certain age, just from Celebrity MasterChef. This isn’t right.”
Wallace went on to question whether comments made by female contestants over the years were being judged with the same scrutiny: “In over 20 years of television, can you imagine how many women, female contestants on MasterChef, have made sexual remarks or sexual innuendos? Can you imagine?”
Banijay UK Statement
Production company Banijay UK confirmed the BBC had received complaints and announced an external investigation into the allegations.
“Whilst these complainants have not raised the allegations directly with our show producers or parent company Banijay UK, we feel that it is appropriate to conduct an immediate, external review to fully and impartially investigate,” a spokesperson said.
The company also reiterated its commitment to the well-being of staff and highlighted the availability of anonymous reporting mechanisms for cast and crew. “Our expectations regarding behaviour are made clear to both cast and crew on all productions, with multiple ways of raising concerns,” the statement added.
BBC’s Response
A BBC spokesperson emphasized the seriousness with which the broadcaster handles complaints: “We are always clear that any behaviour which falls below the standards expected by the BBC will not be tolerated. Where an individual is contracted directly by an external production company, we share any complaints or concerns with that company and will always support them when addressing them.”
Wallace’s Departure from MasterChef
Wallace’s departure marks a significant moment for the MasterChef franchise, where he has been a co-presenter alongside John Torode since 2005. The show has grown into one of the BBC’s flagship cooking programs, spawning spin-offs like Celebrity MasterChef and MasterChef: The Professionals.
Looking Ahead
Banijay UK has invited anyone with information or concerns to contact them confidentially at [email protected]. As the investigation progresses, Wallace has stated his intention to cooperate fully with the review.
While the investigation continues, both the BBC and Banijay UK are ensuring the matter is handled with impartiality and care. Updates on the situation will be shared as the investigation unfolds.
