A suspected terrorist crashed a truck into Temple Israel, Michigan’s largest Reform synagogue, before opening fire – but was shot dead by a brave security guard.
Deadly Rampage At Michigan Synagogue
The terrifying attack unfolded around 12:30pm on Thursday in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The suspect rammed their vehicle into the synagogue and preschool before brandishing a rifle and firing at the building.
Images from the scene showed thick black smoke billowing as dozens of police vehicles swarmed the area. The suspect’s truck also caught fire, prompting a bomb squad to clear the scene.
Security Guard Saves Lives Amid Chaos
Security staff confronted the gunman immediately. One guard was struck by the vehicle and rushed to the hospital but is expected to be OK. The suspect was killed by the guard’s gunfire.
“As you have no doubt heard, Temple Israel was the victim of a terrorist gunman who was confronted and neutralized by our security personnel who are truly heroes,” Temple Israel said in a statement.
The synagogue confirmed all 140 children in their Early Childhood Center along with staff and teachers, are safe following the ordeal.

State Responds, Lockdowns Lifted
Authorities enacted lockdown protocols at synagogues and Jewish schools across the region. The shelter-in-place order was lifted by 3:40 pm once the threat was neutralised and the area declared secure.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard confirmed police are not dealing with additional threats and medics are on site. State police have ramped up patrols at other places of worship.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed agents are on the scene investigating the vehicle ramming and shooting incident.

Community Reacts To Terror Attack
The Jewish Federation of Detroit urged all local organisations to maintain lockout protocols, stressing that antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the attack and hoped for continued safety.
This incident echoes a tragic event months earlier when a Michigan man crashed into a church and opened fire, killing five parishioners.
