Thousands of pounds worth of illegal cigarettes, tobacco, and vapes were confiscated from two shops in Plumstead in a joint operation conducted by Greenwich Council and the Metropolitan Police.

The operation, executed on April 26, saw authorities carrying out a search warrant at a shop in Plumstead. Upon investigation, it was confirmed that the products being sold were illegal. During the operation, police observed a suspect attempting to dispose of products by throwing them to a neighbouring window and fleeing the scene.

Subsequent examination revealed that the discarded items were illegal cigarettes and vapes, leading to their seizure by the police. Additionally, several bags containing illegal tobacco and cigarettes were discovered in a neighbouring flat, with an estimated street value of £15,000.

Further raids conducted on April 28 resulted in the seizure of 1,500 packets of illegal cigarettes and a significant quantity of illegal vapes, valued at approximately £16,000.

The proprietors of the businesses were subsequently brought to court on charges related to the possession and distribution of illegal products.

Commenting on the operation, a spokesperson for Greenwich Council emphasized the potential health risks associated with the sale of illegal tobacco and vape products. They stated, “Selling illegal tobacco products and vapes could have a detrimental effect on our residents’ health, not to mention damaging the reputation of other local businesses.

The spokesperson urged residents to report any suspicions of the sale of illegal goods to London Trading Standards anonymously online or to the National Consumer Helpline.
