A police officer in Sussex has been dismissed without notice after making racist and offensive comments towards a female police officer. PC Dylan Cusano, who was attached to the Central South Command Unit, was found to have breached professional standards of behavior related to discreditable conduct, authority, respect and courtesy, and equality and diversity.
The incident occurred in July 2023 when PC Cusano, who was off duty at the time, called police claiming he had been assaulted in Hastings. Sussex Police officers arrived at the scene to speak with PC Cusano, but he became abusive towards them and directed a racial slur towards a female officer, specifically targeting the Traveller community. PC Cusano then left the scene.
The matter was reported to the Metropolitan Police, who initiated misconduct proceedings against PC Cusano. After considering all the evidence, the hearing concluded on Thursday, October 12, resulting in PC Cusano’s dismissal without notice.
Superintendent Rachel Walmsley from the Central South Command Unit expressed the severity of PC Cusano’s actions, stating that they fell far below the expected behavior of a serving police officer. She emphasised that such behavior undermines the positive work undertaken by the majority of officers and staff on a daily basis throughout London. Superintendent Walmsley stressed the importance of remaining resolute and determined in removing individuals from the Metropolitan Police whose actions do not align with their standards.
As a result of his dismissal, PC Cusano will be placed on the College of Policing barred list, which prohibits him from serving as a police officer or in any related roles in the future.
