WhatsApp to Stop Working on Older iPhone Models from May 5

From May 5, 2025, WhatsApp users with older iPhone models will no longer be able to send or receive messages, as the messaging app phases out support for outdated devices.

The change will affect anyone using an iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6 Plus, as WhatsApp shifts its minimum requirement to devices running iOS 15.1 or newer. Users still relying on these older models will be forced to upgrade their devices in order to continue using the app.

Although these iPhone models now account for a small proportion of WhatsApp users globally, the decision is likely to disappoint fans of the classic devices, many of which were discontinued by Apple as early as 2016 and have since been classified as obsolete.

A WhatsApp spokesperson explained the reasoning behind the update:
“Every year we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices also might not have the latest security updates, or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp.”

They added: “Devices and software change often, so we regularly review what operating systems we support and make updates. Before we stop supporting your operating system, you’ll be notified in WhatsApp and reminded a few times to upgrade.”

Once a device is added to Apple’s obsolete product list, it no longer receives service, security updates, or parts support — making continued use increasingly risky, especially from a security standpoint.

WhatsApp users are encouraged to upgrade to newer devices if they wish to continue using the app beyond the May 5 deadline.
