Chaos in Scottish Borders: Police Warn Against Travel Amid Wild Weather
Severe weather is wreaking havoc across the Scottish Borders. Police Scotland has issued a stern warning: avoid all travel unless absolutely essential.
Roads Blocked and Power Cuts Hit Communities
Scottish Borders Council has already logged over 50 incidents, including fallen trees and storm-damaged buildings. Many more routes are expected to be affected. Key trunk roads are snarled up, and multiple communities face power outages as conditions worsen.
Police Chief Issues Grim Warning
“The situation right across the Scottish Borders is exceptionally challenging tonight. Our resources and those of our partners are being stretched,” said Chief Inspector Neil Mitchell.
“It’s not safe to travel unless absolutely essential. Anyone who must travel should expect treacherous conditions—debris, large branches, fallen trees, surface water, sleet, and snow in some areas.”
“Please check Transport Scotland and Met Office updates regularly.”
Weather Warnings and Road Closures to Continue
- The Council is focusing on emergency cases and clearing dangerous blockages first.
- Many roads will stay closed through most of Saturday as crews clear fallen trees.
- A red warning for heavy rain stays in place for the eastern Borders.
- Coastal flooding alert level 1 has also been issued.
- An amber wind warning covers the whole Borders until 9am Saturday.
- Yellow snow warning affects western and central Borders until 10am Saturday.
Strong gusts will continue throughout the day. Freezing temperatures will increase ice risks, with snow possible in higher Border areas.
Stay indoors. Stay safe.
