Man Dies After Brutal Attack at Lakeside Shopping Centre

Tributes have flooded in for Michael Ugwa, 29, who tragically died following a vicious assault at Lakeside shopping centre last Thursday afternoon.

Two Charged Over Michael’s Murder

Michael was attacked in the food court just before 4.30pm on 28 April. Despite emergency services rushing to the scene, he sadly died there.

On Monday 2 May, police arrested a man and a woman in connection with the attack. They have now been charged.

  • Brandon Lutchmunsing, 19, from Dagenham, charged with murder and affray.
  • Shannon Weston, 20, from Canewdon, charged with assisting an offender.

Both appeared at Southend Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 4 May and were remanded in custody. They face Basildon Crown Court on Friday 6 May.

Heartbreaking Tribute from Michael’s Family

“Michael was a kind man with a large personality and an even larger heart. He was special to many, and his untimely passing is a great sorrow,” said his mother.

“He was the first to help family in need and the last to leave during tough times. Michael was a loving partner, a devoted father to three children, and a pillar of strength for us all.”

“Though he had faults, his constant drive to better himself inspired everyone around him. We will always cherish his memory and kindness.”

“Our hearts are utterly shattered. We ask for privacy as we grieve this devastating loss.”

Police Urge Public to Come Forward

Detective Chief Inspector Ashley Howard, lead investigator, said:

“Our probe is ongoing but making progress. We believe this was a targeted attack on Michael and there is no wider risk to shoppers at Lakeside.”

“We urge anyone with information who hasn’t come forward yet to contact police immediately.”
