Man Jailed for Brutal Attack on Girlfriend with Cast Iron Utensil

Sebastian Birzu savagely beat his girlfriend with a heavy cast iron utensil. He then lied, claiming her injuries came from a fall onto a radiator. The shocking assault took place at their flat on Heath Street on the morning of Saturday 19 March 2022.

Victim Suffers Multiple Skull Fractures

After the violent attack, Birzu called a relative who, along with others, rushed to the scene. Emergency services were called, and the victim was rushed to hospital with multiple skull fractures. She spent six days in a coma and now faces lasting physical and psychological scars.

Perpetrator Arrested and Sentenced

Birzu, 23, fled the scene before police arrived but was caught early the next morning at a property in Greenwich, London. Charged with grievous bodily harm by the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, he pleaded not guilty at Woolwich Crown Court. However, he was convicted after trial and sentenced to four years in prison on Tuesday 13 December.

Detective Praises Victim’s Bravery and Urges Others to Speak Out

“Birzu confessed his crimes to family abroad but kept up lies to police about the victim’s injuries,” said Detective Inspector Adam Marshall. “I want to commend the victim for her immense courage and strength in giving evidence. Domestic violence is a priority for Kent Police – no one should feel trapped or alone. Support is available. Reach out, or ask a trusted friend or relative to help. You always have the option to walk away or get help.”
