Redwood Grove Blast: Investigation Set to Drag On for Weeks
Work is grinding on at Redwood Grove after a devastating explosion ripped through a block of flats, with police warning the search could take weeks. The blast and the fierce fire that followed left the main building too dangerous for teams to enter anytime soon.
Main Block Locked Down, Adjacent Flats May Reopen
While the main block remains off-limits, an adjacent building might welcome residents back by the end of the week. So far, only one death has been confirmed. Authorities haven’t formally identified the victim but are supporting the next of kin through specialist officers.
Police and Fire Chiefs Speak Out
Chief Superintendent John Murphy, leading the Bedfordshire Police response, said, “This is a deeply distressing and traumatic incident, and our thoughts remain with the person who tragically lost their life. We don’t yet know what caused the explosion.” He confirmed multiple lines of inquiry are underway in close collaboration with fire officers.
“Given the damage and risks, it may take some time before we can begin thorough searches at the scene. We cannot rule out the discovery of additional fatalities at this stage.” – Chief Superintendent John Murphy
Community Support and Ongoing Assistance
- Firefighters made reassurance visits throughout the affected area.
- An emergency assistance centre remains open at Bedford’s John Bunyan Centre for displaced residents.
- From Wednesday, an information hub opens at the Harpur Suite in Bedford town centre, open weekdays 9am-5pm.
- Local community donations are aiding evacuees.
- Specialist education and mental health teams held support sessions at a nearby school.
Fire Service and Police Continue Complex Investigation
Trevor Gradwell Smith from Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue revealed a complex fire investigation is ongoing. “The main gas supply has been confirmed as absent. We’re working closely with police and the Urban Search and Rescue Team to stabilise the building.”
He added, “We’ll keep a response presence on site and conduct ‘Safe and Well’ visits to advise residents on fire safety.”
Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner Festus Akinbusoye added, “My heartfelt condolences go out to everyone affected. I am shocked by this loss of life and wish strength to the injured, including one of our firefighters. Our emergency services continue their tireless work to keep the public safe.”
