Deadly Crash: Teen Jailed Over Fatal Westbury Car Smash
Jamie Lee Hitt, 21, from North Wiltshire, has been handed eight years behind bars at Salisbury Crown Court. Judge Parkes KC cut the sentence by a third after Hitt’s early guilty plea.
Fatal Crash on Westbury Street
Hitt admitted causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injuries to two others. He was also charged with driving unlicensed and uninsured.
The horror collision happened at 11.40pm on February 5, 2021, in The Mead, Westbury. Hitt lost control of his Ford Fiesta, smashing into a wall and a tree.
Passenger Bethany tragically died at the scene. Two other passengers, Scarlett Clark-Taylor (20) and Megan Hicks (19), suffered serious injuries and were rushed to hospital.
Judge Condemns Reckless Driving
During sentencing, Judge Parkes highlighted the life-altering injuries suffered and the long road to recovery ahead for the survivors.
Investigating Officer Pete Fennell of the Serious Collision Investigation Team said: “This has been a lengthy investigation and there are no winners in this terrible tragedy. It has brought misery to many people. No sentence will ever bring Bethany back or help those who have had their lives changed.”
He added: “I would like to pay tribute to the victims and their families for their support during the investigation. My thoughts remain with Bethany’s family at this difficult time.”
“Sadly, this case highlights just how devastating dangerous driving can be. In one night, this young man has devastated many people’s lives. I urge all drivers to think twice behind the wheel and consider the fatal consequences of reckless behaviour.”
