More than 100 activists gathered outside the UK Prime Minister’s Office on Sunday, April 19, 2026, to mark the 38th anniversary of nationalist icon Annai Poopathy with a powerful symbolic hunger strike.

Remembering Annai Poopathy: Flags, Flames, and Floral Tributes

The event kicked off at 10am with the hoisting of the Tamil Eelam national flag by former fighter Mukundan, alongside the Union Jack raised by Movement leader Dr Sockalingam Yogalingam. Candle lighting ceremonies honoured fallen Tamil Eelam martyrs, led by Secretary Dr Arunachalam Rajalingam and coordinator Valenthija Mathiyalagan. Coordinators Rajitha and Nindhuya garlanded a memorial for Annai Poopathy, while the crowd observed a moment’s silence to pay respects to the brave souls lost in the struggle.

Patriotic Songs, Speeches, and Solidarity

The mood was charged with fiery speeches from Dr Yogalingam, Dr Rajalingam, and other activists, alongside stirring poetry and patriotic songs honouring Annai Poopathy’s legacy. The symbolic hunger strike lasted six hours, from 10am to 4pm, with fruit juice handed out at the close to break the fast.

Unity and Determination

The event was expertly coordinated by Raghavan and Valenthija Mathiyalagan. Participants ended the day by taking a pledge, reaffirming their commitment to the cause.

“The destiny of Tamils lies in the hands of Tamils”

“The thirst of Tamils is for the homeland of Tamil Eelam”
