The Met is fighting back hard against shoplifters with cutting-edge tech that helps officers catch crooks quicker than ever.
Instant Crime Reports Speed Up Arrests
Since January, new crime reporting tech in hotspots like Lewisham and central London lets retailers upload CCTV footage and reports instantly. Officers get immediate access to sharp evidence, boosting chances of catching repeat offenders crossing borough borders. The results speak volumes. The arrest, charge or conviction rate has soared to 21.4%, smashing the usual Met average of 14%. That means more than one in five shoplifting cases now end with criminals behind bars.
Shoplifting On The Retreat
Last year, the Met nearly doubled the number of shoplifting cases solved and made 1,800 more arrests — a 50% jump. Between April 2025 and March 2026, shoplifting offences dropped by 3.7%, cutting 3,200 incidents from London’s streets. Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes hammered home the message:
“Cracking down on shoplifting is a clear priority for the Met. By boosting neighbourhood teams, using better intelligence, and targeting problem spots, we’re nabbing repeat offenders who hurt shop workers and local businesses. The new tech gives officers a clearer picture and stronger cases. When CCTV is provided quickly, we take swift action.”
Technology & Teamwork: The Winning Formula
Only 20% of shoplifting cases currently come with CCTV evidence, but where clear footage exists, facial recognition software identifies around 80% of suspects. The Met’s partnership with retailers is crucial to this success. Mayor Sadiq Khan praised the approach:
“Backed by record City Hall funding, we’re cracking down on shoplifting and antisocial behaviour with tech that lets shops report crimes remotely and send CCTV in real-time. This helps police catch crooks fast and secure prosecutions. We’re making progress, but will keep up pressure with undercover officers, more patrols, and close work with businesses.”
Lewisham Leads The Way With Real-Time Intelligence
Sara Tetlow from the Safer Business Network hailed Lewisham’s strong police-business ties:
“Lewisham’s partnership spans day & night business scenes—from shopping centres to the high street. Real-time intelligence sharing and teamwork help us spot high-harm offenders, protect the vulnerable, and tackle issues fast. 83% of local businesses now say they feel safer.”
