New ‘Sir Edward Elgar’ Train Unveiled at Worcester Shrub Hill
The shiny new train named “Sir Edward Elgar” was officially launched this morning at Worcester Shrub Hill station. It’s one of 26 brand-new Class 196 trains rolling out across West Midlands Railway (WMR) as part of a massive £690m investment in fresh fleets and upgraded infrastructure.
Latest Route Services and Upgrades
The first Class 196 trains started running between Birmingham and Shrewsbury back in October. Now, after rigorous route testing and driver training, these modern marvels will hit the tracks between Hereford, Worcester, Bromsgrove, and Birmingham starting next month.
Top Brass Praise New Fleet
Ian McConnell, WMR managing director, said:
“I’m thrilled passengers in Hereford and Worcester will soon enjoy these brand-new trains. They come with smart air conditioning that adapts to the carriage environment and power points at every seat.
“Our staff picked the name to honour a local legend, highlighting how much our communities mean to us.”
Tom Painter, West Midlands Rail Executive, added:
“As someone who regularly uses the line from Worcester to Birmingham, these trains offer a journey fitting for this beautiful and historic area.”
Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands, said:
“It’s brilliant that more riders will soon benefit from these trains. We need rail services ready for future growth and prosperity.”
Honouring a Local Legend
Sir Edward Elgar, the famous British composer known for the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, was born near Worcester in 1857. His name was unveiled this morning by Worcestershire’s High Sheriff, Andrew Manning-Cox, in front of invited guests and passenger groups.
