A routine response to a medical emergency took a startling turn on September 9, 2022, when paramedics attending to Kieran Kenny, a resident of Doncaster, made a chilling discovery. Kenny was found in an inebriated state, drifting in and out of consciousness on East Lane, Stainforth. His appearance suggested intoxication to such an extent that he had sustained facial injuries from a fall, with no indications of an altercation with others.
As medics prepared to transport the 39-year-old to the hospital for treatment, an attending paramedic inadvertently stumbled upon a handgun and a separate magazine concealed in Kenny’s sock.
The alarming find immediately prompted the deployment of firearms officers due to concerns that the weapon was loaded and the ammunition was genuine. Kenny confirmed these fears during questioning, stating that he had “activated it myself.”
Following Kenny’s arrest on suspicion of firearms offenses, and while he was receiving treatment for his injuries, a search of his residence at Clifton Court, Thorne, unveiled a cache of 44 weapons. Twelve of these appeared to be illicit, and the assortment comprised machetes and swords, some with blades exceeding 50cm in length.
Kenny faced multiple charges, including five counts of possessing an offensive weapon in a private setting, being under the influence while in possession of a loaded firearm, possession of ammunition without proper certification, and owning a banned firearm. He confessed to all charges at Sheffield Crown Court on December 5, 2022.
Detective Constable Haider Ali, the investigating officer, voiced his concerns, emphasizing the significant danger Kenny posed, especially while intoxicated. “The reason behind his arming himself remains a mystery. Firearms offenses are grave, and we’re relieved to have confiscated the perilous arsenal Kenny unlawfully stored at home,” remarked Ali.
He further stressed the ongoing efforts of the Armed Crime Team in tackling the grave matter of gun-related crime and underscored that crimes involving firearms are unequivocally intolerable.
On October 13, 2023, Sheffield Crown Court sentenced Kenny to five years in prison.
Members of the public are urged to promptly report any concerns or information related to firearms in their vicinity by contacting the police at 101 or 999 for emergencies. To report anonymously, individuals can reach out to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
