A man has been handed an eight-year prison sentence for the rape of an unconscious woman in Hackney, after taking advantage of her vulnerable state due to a medical condition. Mark Anderson, convicted of rape, faced sentencing on Friday for his reprehensible actions against the victim.
The incident occurred on August 6 last year, at Anderson’s residence on Shafton Road, Hackney, East London. The victim, whose identity remains anonymous due to the nature of the crime, experienced a seizure during her time with Anderson. In her incapacitated state, she was unable to consent to any sexual activity.
Recalling the traumatic ordeal, the victim stated that she was aware of Anderson engaging in sexual intercourse with her while she was frozen and unable to respond. The victim’s realization of the assault came after she confronted Anderson, to which he callously responded, “Yeah good!”
Promptly after the assault, the victim reported the incident to the police, initiating urgent investigations into the matter. Subsequent inquiries revealed the victim’s recurring medical condition and Anderson’s attempts to downplay its severity through aggressive communication.
In a statement to the court, the victim bravely expressed the profound impact of the assault on her life. She described experiencing realistic nightmares and feeling constant fear and anxiety, leading to suicidal thoughts. The once-confident and lively individual now feels like an “empty shell,” unable to go out alone without constant fear.
Anderson’s sentencing also included a three-month term for assault, stemming from a separate incident in May last year, during which he became verbally aggressive towards a victim and threw a bag of clothes at them.
Detective Constable Daniel Neville, who led the investigation, condemned Anderson’s actions, emphasizing his exploitation of the victim’s vulnerability. Neville affirmed the strength of the evidence presented in court, which ultimately exposed Anderson’s deceitful claims of consensual sex.
The sentencing serves as a reminder of the severe consequences awaiting those who commit such abhorrent acts of violence, as well as a testament to the resilience of survivors who courageously seek justice in the face of adversity.
