Sellafield Unveils Eco-Friendly Battery-Powered Train
Sellafield, home to one of Britain’s biggest internal rail networks, is upgrading its fleet with a brand-new, fully battery-powered locomotive. The nuclear site’s 11 miles of track play a vital role in supporting UK’s nuclear industry, and the latest upgrade aims to slash carbon emissions and boost rail reliability.
Green Tech Hits the Tracks
The new 40-tonne loco, built in just four months by Clayton in West Lancashire, joins two existing hybrid electric engines already running on site. This marks a major push to retire older diesel models that were less efficient and clunky.
Drivers Praise New Machines
“Drivers much prefer the newer machines. They offer better manoeuvrability and extra comforts compared to the old diesels,” said Mark McSherry, Sellafield’s railways operations manager.
“We began replacing the older fleet nearly three years ago, and it’s been a real game-changer,” he added.
Hands-On From Design to Delivery
Train driver Keiren McCue shared: “We’ve worked closely with Clayton throughout the whole process—from design and build to testing and delivery. I’m excited to see this new loco put to work.”
This green upgrade is set to help Sellafield cut its carbon footprint as it continues to power the nation’s nuclear efforts with cleaner, quieter rail transport.
