Fatal Crash Shuts M40 Northbound in Warwickshire
The M40 motorway is gridlocked after a serious multi-vehicle crash early this morning. The northbound carriageway remains closed between junctions 12 (Gaydon) and 14 (Leamington Spa), causing delays of over an hour and tailbacks stretching at least three miles.
Tragic Van-Lorry Collision Claims Life
The smash, which happened around 5:45 a.m., involved a van and a lorry. Sadly, the van driver was pronounced dead at the scene. West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed: “We were called to reports of a collision near Gaydon at around 5.45 a.m. Sadly, the van driver could not be saved and was confirmed dead at the scene. The lorry driver was uninjured.”
Warwickshire Police and emergency services, including National Highways Traffic Officers, are managing the scene and traffic.
Long Diversions in Place – Avoid the Area
- Drivers should exit at J12 and follow the “Solid Square” diversion symbol.
- Take the B4451 towards Gaydon, then continue on the B4100 for around seven miles.
- The diversion leads back onto the M40 at J14.
National Highways warns the closure will last for an extended period. Motorists are urged to seek alternative routes or delay travel if possible.
Police Appeal for Witnesses and Dashcam Footage
Warwickshire Police has launched a probe into the crash and is appealing for anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward. The northbound M40 between J12 and J13 remains shut. Police said: “Please avoid the area. We expect the closure to remain for some time.”
Witnesses should call 101 or report online quoting incident 42 of 12 September 2024.
Investigation Ongoing as Family Mourns
Detective Sergeant Stephen Barr expressed sympathy: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with the man’s friends and loved ones at this very difficult time.” The cause of the collision is under investigation.
