Five Men Questioned Over Fatal Brixton Academy Crush as Investigation Continues

Two years after the tragic crush at Brixton Academy, police have questioned five men as part of their ongoing investigation into the incident that claimed the lives of 23-year-old Gaby Hutchinson, a security guard, and 33-year-old Rebecca Ikumelo, a mother of two.

The crush occurred during a concert by Nigerian Afropop star Asake on December 15, 2022, when hundreds of people attempted to force their way into the venue. Four individuals were rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and a third woman suffered life-changing injuries.

Investigation Update

Over the past 12 months, the Metropolitan Police have arrested three men and interviewed two others under caution following a public appeal.

Detective Chief Inspector Nigel Penney, leading the investigation, said:
*”Two years after this tragic event, our thoughts remain with Rebecca Ikumelo, Gaby Hutchinson, the young woman who suffered life-changing injuries – and their devastated loved ones.

“We continue to investigate this highly complex case thoroughly and diligently and remain determined to provide answers to the bereaved and the survivors.”*

Three suspects, aged 26 and in their 40s, were questioned on suspicion of manslaughter by unlawful act. They have since been released, and no charges have been made.

Allegations of Bribery and Overcrowding

Reports following the incident alleged security staff took bribes, allowing people without tickets to enter the venue. One employee told the BBC that some guards made as much as £1,000 in cash, leading to overcrowding and chaos.

The worker described the crush as being “like a car crash… people being crashed on and stamped on.” He added that despite training, many security staff froze under the pressure.

Venue Closure and Reopening

The Brixton Academy was forced to close for 16 months after the incident. Following an extensive review and £1.2 million in maintenance and safety improvements, the venue reopened in April 2024 with new safety protocols, including stronger doors, improved queuing systems, and more secure ticketing measures.

The iconic venue has since hosted performances by artists such as Vampire Weekend, Paul Weller, and Paloma Faith.

Legal Action

The family of Gaby Hutchinson has instructed lawyers to pursue legal action over her death, seeking to uncover the truth behind the tragedy.

Ongoing Questions

While the investigation continues, there is growing pressure on the Academy Music Group (AMG), which operates Brixton Academy and 17 other live music venues across the UK, to ensure such an incident does not happen again.

Detectives are urging anyone with information about the events of December 15, 2022, to come forward as they work to piece together the circumstances that led to the devastating crush.
