The UK is bracing for a prolonged cold snap this week as low-pressure systems drag temperatures below average. Snow and ice warnings are still in force, with more updates expected as the weather worsens.

UK Records Coldest Night of Winter So Far

Last night saw temperatures dive to a bone-chilling -13.3°C in Loch Glascarnoch, Scotland — the coldest of the winter so far. While southeast England enjoyed milder double-digit temps, the warmer air has vanished. A cold northwesterly blast is now sweeping in, bringing more freezing nights. Snow-covered areas will suffer the worst frost, but widespread icy conditions and below-average daytime temperatures are expected nationwide.

Snow and Ice Threat to Travel

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Frank Saunders warns:

“Hail, sleet, or snow showers will hit Scotland and Northern Ireland tonight, spreading to Wales and northwest England before reaching the Midlands and southern England by Tuesday morning. Coastal areas in the west might see rain or hail instead.”

“Overnight icy patches are likely due to wet conditions and showers, risking disruption to travel. Snow could pile up a few centimetres above 200m, with some Welsh uplands possibly seeing over 5cm. Even low-lying spots might get a dusting of 0-2cm. Snow locations are tricky to predict, so people should stay prepared.”

Flood Dangers Loom Amid Rain and Melting Snow

Heavy rain combined with melting snow raises the risk of flooding, with many flood warnings still active. Environment Agency Flood Duty Manager Sarah Cook explains:

“Significant river flooding may hit the Midlands, with minor impacts elsewhere in England on Monday and Tuesday.”

“Our teams are working hard to manage defences, issue warnings, and support communities. Residents should check their flood risk, sign up for alerts, and stay updated via official channels.”

Keep an eye on updates from the Environment Agency (England), SEPA (Scotland), NRW (Wales), and Northern Ireland’s Department for Infrastructure.

More Snow and Ice Could Strike Wednesday

The cold spell is far from over. A Yellow Warning covers Wednesday as another weather system looms.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Mike Silverstone cautions:

“Rain, sleet, and snow could sweep in from the southwest on Wednesday, mainly impacting southern UK. Some areas may see 2-5cm of snow, though it’s uncertain if the system will hit the UK or just pass south.”

“We’re monitoring closely and will update forecasts and warnings. The public should stay alert.”
