A second victim has died following a terrible crash on the A19 near Sunderland. The smash happened on March 24, 2025, initially killing a woman in her 70s. Now, a woman in her 40s, who was also involved, has sadly passed away from her injuries, leaving the local community devastated and demanding urgent action on road safety.
What Went Down on the A19?
The accident occurred around 11:30 AM on the northbound A19 near the Nissan factory at Washington, close to the A1290 junction. According to Northumbria Police, a white MAN goods vehicle collided with a blue Vauxhall Mokka.
- Emergency services rushed to the scene, including police, paramedics, and fire crews.
- The female driver in her 70s of the Vauxhall Mokka was badly hurt and died despite paramedics’ best efforts.
- The passenger, a woman in her 40s, was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital but later died on March 29.
The North East Ambulance Service deployed two ambulance crews, specialist paramedics, a rapid response team, and crews from the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to the scene. Police confirm both victims’ families are being supported by trained officers.

The driver of the goods vehicle stayed at the scene and is cooperating with enquiries. Police have called on witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage to come forward to help piece together how the crash unfolded.
