Shock Probe Launched After Mental Health Patient Dies From Head Injuries at Whipps Cross
Man Dies After Collapse in Psychiatric Care
A serious investigation is underway after 70-year-old Andrew George Messum suffered fatal head injuries while detained under the Mental Health Act at Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone.
Mr Messum, from St Albans Crescent, Woodford, was found collapsed on March 8, 2025. A CT scan revealed severe brain trauma, but surgeons ruled him out for surgery. He tragically passed away three days later in hospital.
Coroner Calls For Jury Inquest
At a hearing on April 2, Senior Coroner Graeme Irvine announced the likelihood of a jury inquest into Mr Messum’s death. He pointed out that because Mr Messum was in state detention when injured, and his death involved trauma, a detailed legal inquiry is required.
“The cause of death indicates that trauma contributed to the death,” said Coroner Irvine.
The post-mortem found Mr Messum died from bronchopneumonia caused by a subdural haematoma – a dangerous bleed between the brain and skull.
Family and Hospital Granted Legal Rights
- Mr Messum’s family have been officially designated “interested persons” in the inquest, allowing them to scrutinise evidence and question witnesses.
- Barts Health NHS Trust, which runs Whipps Cross Hospital, has also been granted the same status.
- The coroner has requested the family submit a statement describing Mr Messum’s detention circumstances, how they think his injuries happened, and any concerns.
- The hospital must hand over crucial documents including clinical records, care plans, and a consultant’s statement.
- An internal investigation by the NHS trust is expected, with findings and staff statements to be provided to the coroner.
- If Mr Messum was under another mental health trust’s care, that body could be added to proceedings.
Hospital Responds to Tragedy
A spokesperson for Barts Health NHS Trust said:
“We will support the court process and answer any enquiries the coroner might have.”
The inquiry aims to uncover exactly how Mr Messum’s injuries were sustained while detained and whether proper care protocols were followed. More updates will follow as the investigation unfolds.
