A2 at Standstill After Distressed Soldier Climbs Footbridge Following Wrist Injuries
An entire stretch of the A2 ground to a halt after a distressed serving soldier climbed on top of a footbridge near Buckingham Avenue in Sidcup, following wrist injuries just after midnight on Monday.
Road Closed for Over Three Hours
The Met Police shut the A2 in both directions, sparking heavy traffic jams for over three hours. Specialist officers are negotiating with the soldier, who reportedly told them he intended to take his own life.
Motorists are stuck in snarls stretching both ways as officers try to ease congestion by turning vehicles around via an onslip road. Eyewitnesses say the man was seen standing dangerously on the wrong side of the railings, with police patiently talking him down.
Concern for Welfare Sparks Major Response
The Met confirmed the closure stems from concerns over the soldier’s welfare. A spokesperson said:
“The A2 is currently closed in both directions after we received concerns for the welfare of a man. The situation is being dealt with by specially trained officers and the road closures will remain in place. We ask motorists to avoid the area and will update when more information is available.”
Emergency services on site include several police units, paramedics, and two highly trained HART crews from the London Ambulance Service.
Additional Incident Adds to Chaos
Meanwhile, police are also pursuing a stolen motorbike in the Kent area, with support from the NPAS helicopter, adding further pressure on local roads.
Drivers are urged to find alternative routes while the A2 remains closed between Sidcup and Rochester Way due to ongoing safety concerns.
