Red Flares Spark Major Sea Rescue Operation Off St Mary’s Bay
The RNLI has launched a full-scale search after red flares were spotted near St Mary’s Bay on Thursday night. Reports came in just before 9pm from a member of the public who saw the distress signals close to the shoreline by the Cabu.
Lifeboats and Coastguard Scramble to Scene
The Dungeness all-weather lifeboat The Morrell was first on the scene, launching at 8.55pm with its volunteer crew. The Littlestone lifeboat from New Romney and coastguard search and rescue teams were also deployed, scouring the area by sea and shore.
Using advanced radar and searchlights, crews combed St Mary’s Bay for any vessels or individuals in danger. Meanwhile, coastguard teams patrolled the shoreline to cover every angle.
Search Expands Amid Fresh Flare Sightings
After initial sweeping efforts, the search broadened westward into the bay following reports of further flare activity. RNLI and coastguard forces investigated several radar blips but came up empty-handed. No casualties have been found so far.
Red flares, a clear maritime distress signal, raised serious concern and prompted the rapid response.
Coastguard Lead Ongoing Search Effort
The UK Coastguard Operations Centre in Dover is coordinating the operation. They’ve been in contact with eyewitnesses for any new info to aid the search.
More updates to follow as the search continues.
