Iconic Angel Inn Devastated by Early Morning Blaze
A brutal fire tore through The Angel Inn on North Street, Midhurst, in the early hours of March 18, leaving the town reeling. This beloved pub and hotel, a staple of the community for generations, was gutted by flames, shattering lives and livelihoods overnight.
Owners Praise Community and Emergency Services
The heartbroken owners took to social media to thank locals for their overwhelming support. They were relieved to confirm all Ukrainian families staying at the inn escaped unharmed, though the road to recovery looks tough. “Our beloved and immensely precious hotel burned down before our eyes,” the owners said. “Words cannot describe the relief all our dear Ukrainian families escaped safely. They now face rebuilding their lives, and our family feels an incredible amount of heartache.”
The Angel Inn wasn’t just a building — it was a livelihood for many. The owners also expressed deep gratitude to the emergency services and to Lime and Spice, a nearby restaurant that opened its doors to shelter families during the chaos.
Road Closures and Damage Assessments Underway
West Sussex County Council confirmed that the A286 North Street remains closed to vehicles near the pub for safety reasons. However, local shops unaffected by the fire, the North Street car park, and the western footpath remain open for pedestrians. Chichester District Council’s Building Control team is currently assessing whether the building’s façade can be saved and if the road can be reopened safely.
Community Mourns as Recovery Begins
“We are still in shock but working with Emergency Services to restore normality,” the owners added. “Please bear with us as we face the enormous task of piecing back our lives.”
