27 Dead or Missing After Two Migrant Boats Sink Off Tunisia
Deadly Waters: Two Boats Sink Near Tunisian Coast
Tragedy struck off Tunisia’s east coast as two migrant boats sank, killing or leaving 27 people missing. Desperate to reach Italy, hundreds risk their lives in flimsy vessels that don’t meet safety standards.
The first boat went down on Friday. Carrying 37 souls, only 17 were rescued. Twenty remain unaccounted for. The second sank the next day. Of 43 passengers, 36 were saved, but four bodies washed ashore and three still missing.
Cheap, Unsafe Boats Drive Migrants into Danger
Both coal-iron sheet boats, cheaper but far less safe than traditional wooden crafts, spiralled into disaster. Their woeful condition underlines the desperate risks migrants take to escape hardship.
Tunisia Now Europe’s Deadliest Launchpad
This tragic disaster isn’t isolated. Since March, at least seven shipwrecks off Tunisia have claimed around 100 lives. Once overshadowed by Libya, Tunisia has become the main springboard for migrants fleeing poverty and conflict in sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.
The Tunisian coastguard reveals a shocking surge: over 14,000 migrants intercepted in the first quarter of 2023 — five times more than last year.
People Smugglers Under Fire
Migrants pay huge sums to traffickers who cram them into unsafe boats. Tunisian authorities promise thorough investigations to hunt down those responsible for organising these deadly crossings.
