Najam Shah, Julian Gao, Ruby Hamill, and Daniel Jones have been sentenced for criminal damage after spending over sixteen hours on the roof of Teledyne Defence and Space in Bradford. The protesters caused significant damage using sledgehammers, crowbars, and fire extinguishers during a pro-Palestine demonstration, forcing emergency services to respond and costing hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Deliberate Property Damage
The defendants arrived fully prepared with tools to systematically damage the company’s property. Police emphasised this was a planned act rather than a spontaneous protest, highlighting the serious impact on a local employer and public resources.
Trial And Conviction
The quartet was found guilty by a jury at Bradford Crown Court in February on charges of damaging property and possessing articles with the intent to destroy or damage property.
Sentencing Outcome
Yesterday, Najam Shah, Julian Gao, and Daniel Jones received custodial sentences of 20 months. Ruby Hamill did not attend court, and her sentencing has been postponed to a later date.
Police Statement
“This was not a spontaneous act. They arrived equipped, prepared, and determined to cause as much damage as possible,” said a police spokesperson. “While expressing political views is not a crime, their actions clearly crossed the line into criminality. Attacks on workplaces strain emergency services and unsettle workers. We will always prosecute serious property damage.”
