Ruthless Burglar Jailed for Preying on Elderly Women

Aaron Winzar, 36, has been locked up for four years and eight months after targeting vulnerable elderly women living alone. The sinister thief struck fear into communities, sneaking into homes and stealing cash from ladies aged 82 to 90.

Aaron Winzar’s Sinister Scheme

Winzar, from Bournemouth, appeared at Winchester Crown Court on 20 November. He was found guilty of four burglaries and one attempted break-in, with two offences committed in Salisbury. His victims were all elderly women living in quiet residential areas – prime targets for his cruel crimes.

Faked Plumbing Checks Used to Gain Trust

Winzar used a sneaky trick to break in. Complex Crime Investigator Bianca Ledbury revealed: “He claimed to be there for a plumbing inspection, gaining their trust before sneaking around to steal cash.” Often, the victims didn’t realise they had been robbed until Winzar was long gone.

“Winzar had a chance to earn an honest living but chose to offend repeatedly,” said Investigator Ledbury. “He showed no remorse and caused lengthy police investigations, delaying justice for his elderly victims, who have been remarkably patient.”

Emotional Toll on Victims

No physical harm was done, but the emotional damage runs deep. Victims felt shame and embarrassment at being duped. The financial losses piled up alongside the trauma of being violated in their own homes.

“Winzar called himself a ‘changed man’ but went on to commit more burglaries. Judge Parker described his crimes as ‘selfish, cynical and bordering on cruel.’ Only time will tell if he chooses an honest life,” added Ledbury.

Police Warn: Always Verify Visitors

Winzar’s success partly came from past work with a legitimate company, giving him insider knowledge. For other break-ins, he rehearsed fake reasons to gain entry.

Wiltshire Police urge everyone to check IDs and never let strangers in without proof of their purpose. Investigator Ledbury advises: “Ask for ID and verify their purpose. Use services like Check a Trade when arranging work.”
