In a shocking Christmas heist that sounds straight out of a Hollywood blockbuster, daring thieves drilled through a German bank vault and made off with a staggering £30 million in gold, cash, and valuables — all without anyone noticing for days.

Ocean’s Eleven-Style Heist Stuns Gelsenkirchen

The gang hit the Sparkasse bank in Buer, a quiet suburb of Gelsenkirchen. They smashed through several doors via a car park entrance, then used a monster 42cm-thick drill to bore through an 18-inch concrete vault wall.

Inside, they ransacked 3,300 safety deposit boxes belonging to 2,700 customers. Police called it “exceptionally spectacular” and “like something from TV.” A special task force named ‘Core Drill’ is now on the hunt for the thieves.

£30 Million Loot, Thousands Devastated

The haul included gold bars, wads of cash, jewellery, and precious personal belongings totalling around £30 million. At least 2,500 Sparkasse customers were robbed, with officials urging them to assume their deposits have been stolen.

Witnesses spotted several men cramming large bags down a car park stairwell, making their getaway in a black Audi RS6 with a stolen Hanover licence plate.

Furious Customers Demand Justice

On Tuesday, angry customers protested outside the bank, chanting “We want in!” and confronting police officers. Many mourned losing life savings, gold saved for weddings, holidays, and future generations.

“It’s all gone,” said one devastated customer who had just stored money in a safe deposit box before heading on holiday.

“Where’s the security? I’m a blue-collar worker, and all my savings have vanished,” another added.

Critics slammed the bank’s lax security, pointing out even supermarkets like Lidl and Aldi use motion detectors — yet the Sparkasse vault was breezed through undetected.

Police Probe Ongoing, Questions Remain

Police still don’t know exactly when the break-in happened. They only found out after responding to a fire alarm just before 3:40am on December 27. No visible damage was noticed at the time.

Investigators believe the raiders used a 20kg drill with a synthetic diamond-coated crown, high-tech gear that needs constant cooling to operate.

A police spokesperson told Bild: “Behind this spectacular crime lie many individual tragedies.”

Sparkasse has urged customers to steer clear of the branch as it works with insurers. The investigation is ongoing, with police appealing for witnesses to come forward.
