A huge blaze has erupted at a derelict sports centre on Imperial Way, Croydon, sparking a massive emergency response this afternoon.

At least 70 firefighters and ten fire engines rushed to the scene, tackling an intense fire engulfing the two-storey building. Two massive 32-metre turntable ladders dumped torrents of water from above in a bid to douse the inferno.

Station Commander Tony Perks warned nearby residents and businesses to take caution:
“Crews are making steady progress and are expected to remain here for several hours tonight. The fire is producing smoke, so residents and businesses nearby should keep windows and doors shut.”

The first emergency call came at 4:26pm, prompting rapid deployment from fire stations across Croydon, Purley, Wallington, Norbury, Mitcham, and surrounding areas.
