Teen Fishing Contest Hooks Youngsters Away from Trouble in Maidstone
Youngsters in Maidstone cast their lines, not trouble, last weekend in a fishing competition designed to curb anti-social behaviour. The initiative, called Fish Fest, was led by PCSO Kirsty Greaves and backed by Kent Police, Kent County Council’s youth hub, and local businesses.
Fish Fest: Angling for Change
Concerned residents had flagged issues around a lake by Mallards Way, Downswood. In response, nine local teens were invited to take part in the event fully funded by Golding Homes Housing Association. Before hitting the water, the lads took part in two educational sessions at InfoZone in Maidstone Youth Hub, where they learned the ropes and got their bait.
Reeling in Rewards at Monks Lakes
The main event took place at Monks Lakes, Staplehurst on 28-29 October 2023. Organisers and supporters, including the Maidstone Community Safety Unit, were on hand to cheer the group on. Cast A Thought, a charity using fishing to boost mental health, provided gear and coaching throughout the weekend.
- Sunday wrapped up with a prize competition sponsored by Ashford Angling Direct and Maidstone Angling Shop.
- Vouchers and fishing equipment were up for grabs, sparking fierce but friendly rivalry.
“Fish Fest was a success, providing a focussed learning opportunity for young people in the Downswood area. We initially expected six children but were thrilled when more turned up,” said PCSO Greaves.
“They now feel ready to enjoy fishing safely and legally. Huge thanks to local services and businesses—we can’t wait for the next event!”
This new approach proves that sometimes, a fishing rod is mightier than the sword when it comes to tackling youth issues.
