Southampton Student Charged with Manslaughter After Valentine’s Day Death

Ryan Cooper, a 21-year-old law student from Southampton, has been charged with manslaughter following the tragic death of 49-year-old Gary ‘Jeff’ Stacey. The incident happened after a night out on Valentine’s Day earlier this year.

Heartbreaking Scene on St James’ Street

Jeff Stacey was found seriously injured in the middle of St James’ Street by a bus driver in the early hours of Sunday, 14th February. He was rushed to Southampton General Hospital with critical head injuries. Sadly, his family made the agonising decision to switch off his life support.

From Assault to Manslaughter Charge

  • Ryan Cooper, originally from Newport and living on Alma Road, was first arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.
  • After Jeff Stacey’s death, Cooper was re-arrested on suspicion of murder.
  • He was later released without charge for murder but now faces manslaughter.

Cooper is set to appear before the Isle of Wight Combined Court on Friday, 1st July.
