Cover-Up Shattered by Police

A mum has been locked up for masterminding a cover-up after her son left a six-year-old boy battered in a hit-and-run. Terry Follows played a “leading role” in helping her motorbike-riding son, Kaylem Longhurst, dodge justice after he struck young Arlo Buckley. Arlo, now eight, suffered multiple serious injuries in the crash on Central Drive, Shotton, Flintshire, on 11 September 2024. Longhurst, just 18, fled the scene but was later tracked down to York. His sister, Cara Haran, and her partner, Shane Hunt, also helped hide the evidence.

Family Conspired to Evade Justice

  • Shane Hunt drove Longhurst away after the crash.
  • Cara Haran burned Kaylem’s clothes to erase proof.
  • Longhurst’s motorbike was hidden in a nearby alley.

Despite their efforts, Longhurst was arrested and admitted dangerous driving. At Mold Crown Court, all four were found guilty of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Sentences Handed Down

  • Terry Follows, 43, jailed for 26 months – the judge said she “organised all this” and showed no remorse.
  • Shane Hunt, 39, sentenced to 21 months behind bars.
  • Cara Haran, 25, received a nine-month jail term.
  • Kaylem Longhurst got 14 months in a youth detention centre. He also faces a 2-year 7-month driving ban and must retake his test.

Judge Slams Mother for Ignoring Risks

“She knew her son’s bike was unsafe and that he shouldn’t have been on the road,” the judge said. “After the crash, Longhurst chose to run. He even admitted he thought he’d killed the child.”

“Follows then organised a conspiracy to help him escape justice, with his sister destroying evidence and removing the bike as emergency crews rushed to help Arlo.”

The judge added there was “no remorse” from Follows or Hunt over Arlo’s injuries.

Police Condemn Callous Cover-Up

Temporary Detective Inspector Katie Davies of North Wales Police called the case “shocking and deeply distressing.”

“A young child was seriously hurt, yet the culprit fled and his own family helped him avoid the consequences.”

This grim case highlights the bitter reality when family loyalty goes rogue, putting a child’s welfare at risk.
