R&B superstar Chris Brown has avoided immediate imprisonment after being handed an eight-month suspended prison sentence for his involvement in a violent nightclub attack in which a music producer was repeatedly struck with a glass bottle.
The 37-year-old American singer was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on Monday 26 October 2026, after pleading guilty to affray earlier this year.
The case centred on an incident involving music producer Abraham Diaw at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, central London, on 19 February 2023.
Brown arrived at court on Monday morning surrounded by security guards, wearing a black leather jacket, cap and face covering.
Supporters gathered outside the building, with some cheering as he entered.
Judge Condemns Dangerous Bottle Attack
During sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner condemned Brown’s repeated use of a glass tequila bottle against Mr Diaw.
The court heard that Brown approached the producer through a crowd on the nightclub dancefloor before striking him twice over the head with the bottle.
He then struck Mr Diaw on the shoulder and attempted another blow.
The judge said the violence was dangerous and risked causing injuries significantly more severe than those the victim suffered.
Mr Diaw was treated at hospital for head and knee injuries.
The attack took place in a crowded nightclub and was captured on CCTV, which became important evidence in the prosecution.
Vocal Coach Also Admitted Affray
Brown’s friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, was also involved in the confrontation.
Prosecutors said Akinlolu joined the incident and punched Mr Diaw in the head as the victim attempted to escape.
The court heard that the violence continued as Mr Diaw moved through the nightclub.
Akinlolu also pleaded guilty to affray at Southwark Crown Court on 24 July 2026.
During Monday’s hearing, Judge Baumgartner acknowledged that Akinlolu had not started the confrontation but had nevertheless participated in the violence.
The separate sentence imposed on Akinlolu had not been confirmed in the reporting available for this update.
More Serious Charges Dropped Following Guilty Plea
Brown had initially denied a series of charges connected with the nightclub incident, including attempted grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon.
Those charges were subsequently dropped following his guilty plea to affray.
The singer was therefore sentenced for the affray offence, rather than for the separate allegations that were not pursued.
Affray carries a maximum sentence of three years’ imprisonment when prosecuted in the Crown Court.
Brown received an eight-month suspended sentence, meaning he was not immediately sent to prison. A suspended custodial sentence can be activated if its conditions are breached or further offences are committed during the relevant period.
The precise suspension period and any additional requirements were not established in the initial sentencing report.
Singer Arrested at Manchester Hotel in 2025
The criminal case followed an investigation by the Metropolitan Police into the 2023 confrontation.
Brown had left the UK after the incident and was arrested when he returned in May 2025.
Police detained him at a Manchester hotel ahead of a planned concert appearance.
He was initially held in custody before being granted bail with security arrangements valued at £5 million.
The bail arrangements allowed him to continue his international Breezy Bowl XX tour while proceedings remained active.
Brown eventually admitted affray in July 2026.
Eight-Month Suspended Sentence Imposed
Brown returned to Southwark Crown Court on Monday to learn his punishment.
After considering the circumstances of the offence, Judge Baumgartner imposed an eight-month suspended prison sentence.
The outcome means the singer avoids immediate incarceration despite the court’s finding that his conduct involved dangerous violence.
The case has attracted international attention because of Brown’s prominence in the music industry and the circumstances of the nightclub confrontation.
