A Co-op store in Upminster has been forced to shut its doors today after police cordoned off the area following a suspected overnight crime spree.
Residents waking up this morning were met with the shocking sight of police tape and patrol cars surrounding the Co-op, with officers standing guard at the scene. One local, Maria Sinclair, posted online:
Just saw that the Co-op is closed and police there. It looks like the scumbags were busy last night.
The store, located in a residential area, remains closed to the public as forensic officers are believed to be gathering evidence inside.
Details on the Incident Remain Sparse
At this stage, police have not officially confirmed the nature of the incident — but locals suspect it was either a burglary, attempted break-in, or criminal damage overnight. Witnesses report that police arrived early this morning and immediately sealed off the front of the store.
Photos from the scene show a police cordon across the car park entrance and a patrol vehicle parked outside the building.
Residents Left Angry and Anxious
The incident has sparked outrage among locals, many of whom rely on the Co-op as their nearest convenience store.
It’s disgusting. We can’t even shop in peace anymore,” one resident said.
Police are expected to release more information later today.
