Eight Arrested and Seven Weapons Seized After Southend Violence
Police cracked down hard on a violent outbreak in Southend on Tuesday night, arresting eight people and confiscating seven weapons. The shocking disorder has ramped up security across the town, with stop-and-search powers now extended until 8pm on Wednesday, 31 July.
Two Injured in Chaos, But No Life-Threatening Wounds
Two of those arrested suffered injuries requiring hospital treatment, but thankfully, neither is facing life-threatening or life-altering conditions. Officers acted swiftly to contain the situation and protect the public.
Chief Superintendent Vows Zero Tolerance
“These incidents are appalling – we will not tolerate this dangerous and violent behaviour on our streets,” said Chief Superintendent Leighton Hammett. “We responded quickly with officers already patrolling the seafront, making arrests to keep people safe. We have several lines of enquiry to identify further suspects and bring them to justice.”
Early reports suggest groups of young men and women travelled into Southend before the trouble flared, but authorities stress only a small minority were involved in targeted attacks.
Police and Partners Join Forces to Disperse Crowds
Hammett also thanked the British Transport Police and local security teams for their crucial role in dispersing crowds and enforcing the dispersal order.
“Stop and search powers have already removed weapons from the streets. Anyone spotted carrying a knife in Essex won’t get away with it. We’ll be out again today across the city and seafront – if you have any information about last night’s disorder, speak to our officers,” he added.
